Operation ZAHAR

Operation ZAHAR  was a combined a joint Afghan National Army/Coalition Forces security operation in July of 2006  to remove Taliban forces from the Zharei (Zhari) district of southern Afghanistan.

The offensive was initiated after locals supplied information that the Taliban had emerged in the area. Coalition forces were able to quickly move on the information, gaining the element of surprise.

The video filmed by MCpl Ronald Duchesne from Canadian Forces Combat Camera shows soldiers from A Company, the 1st Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, and Afghan forces engaging the Taliban in an intense firefight during the battle of Zharei/Panjwai near Kandahar. This rare footage captured the first images of Canadian soldiers engaged in combat against enemy forces since the Korean War.
